    Eureka!
It took me a while to run through the list against the standard nayanmAr list.
Poor OVK was misled that mANikkavAcagar was one in the 63. He was given a wrong list by somebody who introduced maNivAcagar in the list.

  9. Since periya purANam is my favorite here are some more issues.
    1. In the wikipedia list of nAyanmArs they have slipped in placing kalikkambar after kURRuvar rather than before kaliya nAyanAr. Any reason?
    2. As for order in which the names appear, even Sundarar did not arrange them in any particular order. He put tirumIlakanTar first because his name jibed with the Lord himself. Also tirunIlakanTar was from tillai the abode of the Lord.
    3. OVK might have placed sambandhar first perhaps due to him being the youngest of the lot when he started composing. Also sIrkAzhi was not far from OVK's UttukkADu.
After the samayakkuravargaL, OVK placed siRuttoNDar first followed by tirunIlakanTar. Again tiruccengATTAnguDi ) ciRuttoNDar's birthplace) is close to UttukkADu.

    4. Finally a mini-quiz (easy one!):
How many female nAyanmArs were mentioned by Sundarar?

No question about that. OVK's diction is tremendous. Listing names in a poetic form requires lot of imagination and spontaneous construction too. Not only he aranged the names to suit syntax but also modified the names slightly without losing the identity. It is an irony that OVK has not been ranked on par with the trinity.

First of all "mangayarkkarasi" is wrong. Sundarar mentions her only by her maiden name, i.e., "mAni".
Secondly "KAraikkAl ammaiyAr" is also wrong. Sundarar refers to her as "pEyAr"
It is the same answer that Jeeva gave earlier in a private email. I told him it is a loaded question.
The answer is either 0 or 3 depending on how you read the question..
    Read the question again.
1.How many "nAyanmArs"? None, zilch, zero. Sundarar mentions mangayarkkarasi and kAraikkAl ammaiyAr as aDiyArs (servitors) ---not as nAyanmArs. Upon literal reading of the question there are no female nAyanmArs mentioned by Sundarar. Also the terminology of "nAyanmArs" was coined much later--either by nambiyANDAr nambi or SEkkizhAr or later.
    2. How many nAyanmArs were "mentioned" by Sundarar? Three. If we offer the designation of "nAyanmAr" post-facto to those mentioned by Sundarar, then there are three.
Since Sundarar mentioned his mother ( when he describes himself as the darling son of saDayanAr and isaignAniyAr) in his 11th stanza of that padigam (in addition to "pEyAr" and "mAni" earlier), the number of nAyanmArs "mentioned" by Sundarar adds up to 3..

So, how do you like the "podi vaitta kELvi"?
OK, OK, you don't have to get wild and throw stones at me!! I am a teacher and can design the question the way I think it ought to be answered!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  34. //How many nAyanmArs were "mentioned" by Sundarar? Three. If we offer the designation of "nAyanmAr" post-facto to those mentioned by Sundarar, then there are three//

Can you vouch that the word "nAyanmAr" existed or was used to represent the 60 aDiyAr tht Sundarar mentioned? If so please present evidence. My understanding is that the aDiyAr ----> nAyanmAr came later. You may do some research on this.

You misread my post. Go back and read again. I put in quotes "mentioned". I didn't say Sundarar said "isagnAniyarkku aDiyEn". Mention means just mention. I specifically explained that he mentioned isaignAniyar's name that he is the son of saDaiyanAr and isagnAniyar. Don't insert words in my text which I did not use nor mean.

I did not deny that. Why would I do that when I gave the alternate answer of "3".
Yes he mentions 2 female aDiyArs. What I said was you cannot find "mangayarkkarasi" or "kAraikkAl ammaiyAr" in Sundarar's songs. Instead you get "mAni" and "pEyAr". Go back and read again.

I put nAyanmArs in quotation marks to distinguish aDiyAr from nAyanmArs. Sundarar did not use the term nAyanmArs. That was the crux of my question.

Yes. But I did not say that he did. You are assuming I did. But he "mentioned" (mention means the name of isaignAni is there---that is all) his father's and mother's name as his signature. I knew thta. Why do you assume I was not aware of that? You didn't seem to have grasped the "poDi" in my question. The two words in quote marks are the key words to make readers think.

May be! But the equivalence was shown much later than Sundarar's period. Sundarar knew it only as aDiyAr.
If by aDiyAr we mean "adiyAr = = nAyanmAr" do we mean togai adiyAr== togai nAyanmAr and tani aDiyAr == tani nAyanmAr?
You have to be consistent throughout.

  53. OK, final statement from me.
The quotation marks were used later in response to your answer and my amplification. Let us look at the question again.
How many female nAyanmArs were mentioned by Sundarar?
I allowed two answers: 0 and 3 for the two camps.

    1. Answer: None, because he did NOT use the word "nAyanmArs" in his padigam. He only used aDiyAr when he referred to "mAni" and "pEyAr". He mentioned isaignAniyAr's name only in connection with his ancestry--- SaDaiyan and isaignAni. So there were two female aDiyArs and one other female person--his mother-- mentioned in the 11 stanzas describing the aDiyArs when he entered the holy dEvAsiriyan. Sundarar, for that matter, did NOT mention ANY nAyanmAr --male or female. He did NOT use the word "nAyanmAr". That is the point of the "poDi"
    2. Answer: Three. After nambiyANDAr nambi and SekkizhAr included Sundarar and his parents in the count of 63 aDiyArs (tani aDiyArs if you like) and later on they were called nAyanmArs (does not matter when the expression nAyanmAr was associated with aDiyAr), the count becomes three for female nAyanmArs. Here again if you accept the term "nAyanmArs" is applied retroactively to the "aDiyArs" of Sundarar, if the question is how many nAyanmArs were "eulogized" by Sundarar then the answer is "two" because he did not eulogize his mother (i.e., "isaignAniyArkkum aDiyEn")

    3. Forget the quote marks, which were intended as amplification for my explanation. If I asked how many female aDiyArs were "eulogized" by Sundarar then the count is "two". How many aDiyArs were "mentioned"? ---it is still 2, since his mother was not mentioned by him as an aDiyAr.

  54. Alright Sir,
You have given the explanation for all the three answers!
Lets put the arguments to rest with that!

  55. Why dont you try to discover the religious philosophy behind treating oneself a worshipper of the so-called adiyaar?

Why so much importance to the adiyaar?

Who are such adiyaars? What are their characteristics?

Should one fulfil all such characteristics in order to become an adiyaar?

Will Nammaalvaar or anyone who is said to be 'addiyaarkku adiyaar'square times, as you like, take only those adiyaars with those characteristics?

What about those helluva lot of others who are simple and ordinary folk, unknown and obscure?

Such questions rose in the mind of a woman by name Therse who felt that she had nothing to offer to God, like sacrifices, mortal pains, meditations, fasting or such self-mortifications. She was not even a nun or connected to church anyway, but just an ordinary person with simple and unknown life with devotion!

She compared herself to a little flower and lived an obscure life in devotion her chrisitian god. Today, the catholoics around the world treat her their saint with the nickname LITTLE FLOWER.

It appears there is much அலட்டல் in your blogpost or in the idea of adiyaar, which appears to be obstenatious and pompous!

Or, maybe, Hindus, in general, are arrogant. They dont know any such thing called humility, at least before their gods or goddesses.

  56. Dear Jo,

    May the God bless you!
You ended up with coining a nice word - Humility. Without Humility, it would be impossible to reach God even at the lowest level, I am sure.
You may want to check my blogpost on this:
    http://jeevagv.blogspot.com/2009/06/humility.html

Adiyars - Be it NayanmAr or alwAr or any Indian saint - always showed humility, and they excelled in it. Not just one or two - Innumerable.

Don't you see humility in treating oneself a worshiper of the adiyAr? I do.

There are no special characteristics needed to qualify to be called as adiyAr. All of them were simple. All they new for one reality known as 'God' and they saw that doing service to the fellow adiYar as the vehicle of transport in reaching the God. And they succeeded too. And it became a Movement - and those movements are what today we call as 'nAyanmArs' or for that matter, 'AlwArs'.

The Indian land, and its people are shaped by ultimate qualities of noble moral virtues that are incomparable to anywhere else. But I would not discount saying only in India they are possible. Everyone can have their piece of cake.
