  15. I heard the audio part a few days ago as uploaded on sangeethapriya.org. Visaka Hari is one top-rate upanyAsaki-cum-musician with vast knowledge and perfect blend of music and talk, and impeccable pronunciation. When she talks and sings divinity glows in her face. At such a young age she is a perfect manifestation of scholarship, devotion, and modesty. The so-called maDisAr kaTTu is also called ayyangAr kaTTu (which can be had with 6 yards rather than the traditional 9 yards of old days). I understand she is originally a saivaite by birth and got married into the ayyangAr family.

Regarding the "oru magaLai uDaiyEn...." it is a pAsuram by PeriyAzhwAr in a decad where he describes the status of a mother in gOkulam moaning about her daughter moving away after wedding. Can some of you explain how that got attributed to PeriyAzhwAr himself regarding ANDAL's merger with Ranganatha? That lamentation perhaps is an echo of his pain at getting separated from his foster-daughter. But I am wondering how it got transposed to such an extent that now it is taken as his own lamentation about ANDAL.

I agree and would have liked it in aTANA, with an air of confidence and authority when ANDAL talks about "kaittalam paRRak kanAk kaNDEn tOzhI nAn!"

You need not at all feel "unfortunate" about the comparison, Jeeva!

    Sethu Sir...
    This is bhakthi literature...
You cannot scale it with word count, context count, etc etc, as if, it is in Microsoft Word.

Agreed, Periyazhwar wrote it from a mother's perspective about her love-struck daughter...much earlier than the marriage of Kothai!

Now just give it a practical thought. You write a poem on something and will you not use in your own practical life later, when u get into such a nice situation? Will not Bharathi sing a song that he wrote on Kannamma earlier, to his Chellamaal later?
    Same here...

Though Periazhwar wrote this as an imaginary piece, he knew by that time, that Kothai has so much love for The Lord! Though he was not sure how that marriage was going to happen, he had started believing in the heart of hearts, that this would happen eventually, if the Lord willed.

(Already The Lord has communicated to Azhwar, His Will, that he needs the garlands from Kothai only. Or else will he dare to do such garlanding?)

So Azhwar's belief system has started working and he has started visualizing a life without Kothai!(post marriage scenario)

So when Andal dreamt and wrote abt Arangan,
Azhwar dreamt and wrote abt his own daughter, in a guise.

When the real thing happened, he just could compare his own songs to his present state...as simple as that!

    So, Trust me...
Nothing //got transposed to such an extent that now it is taken as his own lamentation about ANDAL!//
Pl dont make nice persons like Jeeva feel that "our unfortunate views of comparing them"

  20. >>Agreed, Periyazhwar wrote it from a mother's perspective about her love-struck daughter...much earlier than the marriage of Kothai!<<

    KRS;
That is exactly my point! He wrote it to express the turmoil that was going through the mind of the gopika's mother. One cannot interpolate there (as most harikatha people tend to do) that such emotion expressed his own situation or was meant to convey a future incident in PeriyAzhwAr's own life of having to part with ANDAL. If he lost ANDAL to the Lord first and then he wrote the pAsuram about the gopi's mother, then you can say his own feelings started welling up and they poured forth with vigor. I feel that PeriyAzhwAr did not think (for sure) that would happen to him in his personal life (that ANDAL would be taken away by the Lord, although both he and ANDAL wished for and believed in it) and then express that feeling in that pAsuram. If we assume that as a premise for writing that single pAsuram, then the expression would have been "sengaN mAl tAn koNDu pOvAnO?" (in future tense) rather than "koNDu pOnAn" (in the past tense). If he wrote that pAsuram after ANDAL was taken away then we can take it as reflecting his personal situation.

The harikatha folks want to add flavor to their stories and so embellish certain situations with extrapolation, interpolation and redesign of incidents.

One such feature you can see is the story depiction by Balakshna SastrigaL versus that by Visaka Hari. The former describes it as the Lord appearing in his dream and that of the Pandya king asking them to bring ANDAL to Stirangam and they all proceed with ANDAL in the palanquin to Srirangam wherein ANDAL disappears at the sanctum sanctorum. Visaka Hari adds one more juicy episode prior to the trip to Srirangam(--that a young man by name Rangarajan comes to Srivilliputtur saying he met PeriyAzhwar in Srirangam and he wants the precious gem that PeriyAzhwar has in his home---etc., etc., The young man and ANDAL get married in Srivilliputtur. All the people think it was a human wedding but only PeriyAzhwAr and ANDAL know it was the Lord himself). This was how mythology got built up in the age-old times, accumulating variations in episodes.

  21. >>Now just give it a practical thought. You write a poem on something and will you not use in your own practical life later, when u get into such a nice situation? Will not Bharathi sing a song that he wrote on Kannamma earlier, to his Chellamaal later?<<

There is a difference between this analogy and the PeriyAzhwAr situation.
Bharathi did not imagine KaNNamma as his sweetheart only. His KaNNammA songs were addressed to ParAsakthi. He visualized Her as his child, love, goddess etc. If the occasion rose, yes, he would have used a love song on his wife. Perhaps it didn't happen. In all the chaos that surrounded his fugitive and proud but penurious life he did not get an opportunity to live his imaginary life into a real one.
My point is that the discussants of ANDAL story project what PeriyAzhwAr wrote in the past about the gokulam mother to his own future regarding his own daughter. For purposes of bringing out the pathos it may be OK but they have to make a distinction by saying his situation is similar to what he wrote earlier about an imaginary mother's distress rather than implying he said "oru magaLai...." after he lost ANDAL to the Lord. When I wrote the ANDAL story (in chennaionline) mentioning this situation I did not question this aspect because I did not want to offend the sensitivities of the believers. Here, I am afraid I might have done so (but this is a smaller audience).

    That is exactly my point!//

I can fully understand your point from a chronology perspective Sethu Sir!

//The harikatha folks want to add flavor to their stories and so embellish certain situations with extrapolation, interpolation and redesign of incidents//

But, I dont think Visaka Hari, said here that... Periyazhwar "composed a poem and sang" instantaneously on the separation of Andal. Did she say so???

The way she brings out the "bhavam"... she uses a earlier poem to do it. Thatz it.
But the "power of the bhavam", makes you "assume" so! :))

Visaka Hari does not "transpose or interpolate" the pasuram!

//One such feature you can see is the story depiction by Balakshna SastrigaL versus that by Visaka Hari//

Andal travels to Srirangam and merges with the Lord at the temple.
But upon the request of Periazhwar, that folks back in their village should see the marriage for themseleves, with their own eyes...the Lord agrees to come as Ranga-Mannar to Villiputhur and do a "lowkeekimaana" marriage.

TSB talks abt the former and Visaka talks abt the latter!

//This was how mythology got built up in the age-old times, accumulating variations in episodes//

    he he!
May be! But no in this instance...
Both TSB & Visaka are true.
Dont rush to conclude or assume that "bhagavathas" just make up stories and versions :)

I can understand your viewpoint and I just invite you to understand the "bhagavatha" view point also!

  23. >>But, I dont think Visaka Hari, said here that... Periyazhwar "composed a poem and sang" instantaneously on the separation of Andal. Did she say so???<<

No, I did not say nor imply that she said so. But she used that verse in the context. It is fitting alright. My point was PeriyAzhwAr did not anticipate his future predicament and sang it before through the mouth of the gopika's mother. The way that harikatha people put the story together makes you feel that kind of connection was real ( for contextual accuracy). That is all. As you see harikatha relies on packed emotion and they are perhaps justified in doing so. When I said " that is how mythology gets built up" I meant the contextual distortion. There are no songs (to my knowledge) by PeriyAzhwAr about what happened at Srirangam. Most of ANDAL's story was written/told by VaishNava AcAryAs who came much later, after reading ANDAL's pAsurams and PeriyAzhwAr's too to finally put all events together to do the story.

What you say above was written/told by some AcArya after PeriyAzhwAr's time (perhaps by a recent exponent of which TSB was not aware). TSB, however, does not mention in his harikatha that there occurs a laukIka wedding at all. In Visaka Hari's narration the order is reversed from what you indicated above. She said a handsome youth by name Rangarajan (age 25 to be specific---see the additional emphasis on a handsome youth to attract the audience's attention and tears in their eyes) came to Srivilliputtur to seek ANDAL, the wedding takes place, the townfolks are happy, and then the couple (with a retinue) proceed to Srirangam. That is what I mean by variation and concoction (perhaps not by Visaka Hari herself --may be she read it somewhere). This variation is not mythology now. But in another 200 or so years it will be added to the annals of mythology.
