இந்தியர்களின் உலகநோக்கு பற்றியொரு கருத்துக்கணிப்பு

"திரைகடலோடியும் திரவியம் தேடு" என்ற பழமொழிக்கேற்ப அன்று தொட்டு இன்று வரை பாரத நாட்டிலிருந்து தங்கள் வாழ்க்கை மேன்மையின் குறிக்கோளிற்காக பல நாடுகளில் தற்காலிகமாகவும், நிரந்திரமாகவும் குடியேறி பொருள் ஈட்டுவோர் ஏராளம், ஏராளம்.

இன்றைய உலகத்தின் அக்கரைப்பச்சைகளில் அரசனாக திகழும் அமெரிக்காவிற்கு எப்படியாவது வந்தாக வேண்டும் என்று கனவு கண்டு அதை நிறைவேற்றியவர்களின் எண்ணிக்கை, இன்றைய கணக்குப்படி - 1.2 மில்லியன்!

கணிணித்துறையில் சென்ற பத்து ஆண்டுகளில் ஏற்பட்ட மாற்றங்கள், இந்தியர்களின் வருகை அமெரிக்காவில் பெருகுவதற்கோர் வடிகாலாய் வழி வகுத்தது. அதே துறையினர் தங்கள் துறையில் உள்ள அமெரிக்க இந்தியர்களைப்பற்றி ஓர் கணக்கெடுப்பு நடத்தியுள்ளனர். அதன் முடிவுகளில் இருந்து சில துளிகள் இங்கே:

வளைந்து கொடுக்கும் தன்மையும், புதிய வணிக நுட்பங்களை கற்றுக்கொள்ளும் ஆர்வமும் தான் உலக சந்தையில் வெற்றி பெருவதற்கு முக்கியமான காரணிகளாக தென்படுகின்றன.

உலக நோக்குடன் செயலபடுவதற்கு ஒருவர் எந்த நாட்டிலிருந்து வந்திருக்கின்றார் என்பது முக்கியமில்லாவிட்டாலும், இந்தியர்களிடமும், அமெரிக்கர்களிடமும், ஜப்பனியர்களுமே மற்ற நாட்டவர்களைக்காட்டிலும் அதிகமான உலக நோக்குடன் செயல்படுகிறார்களாம்.

இந்திய கணிணித்துறையினர் தங்களிடம் இருக்கும் காலத்திற்கேற்ப வளைந்து கொடுக்கும் தன்மையாலேயே உலகச்சந்தையில் மாறிவரும் காலத்திற்கேற்ப தாக்குப்பிடிக்க இயல்வாதாக கருதுகிறார்கள்.

அவர்களின் இந்தியரல்லாத சகாக்களிடம் கேட்டபோது, இந்திய கணிணித்துறையினரிடம் அதிகமான தொழில் நேர்மை காணப்படுவதாக கூறுகின்றனர். அவர்கள் மற்றவர்களைக் காட்டிலும் அதிகமான நேரம் வேலை செய்ய முன்வருவதாகவும், அதில் தாக்குப்பிடிப்பதாகவும் கூறுகின்றனர்.

விண்டோஸில் மேக் வடிவம்

ஆப்பிளின் பூட் கேம்ப் அறிவிக்கப்பட்டு சில வாரங்களாகி விட்டது. ஆப்பிளின் மேக் கம்பூயூட்டர்களின் Windows XP தரவிரக்கம் செய்து கொள்ள வழி வகை செய்துள்ளது. இந்த செய்தி இரண்டு வகையான எதிர்வினைகளை ஏற்படுத்தியது. விண்டோஸை வெறுப்பவர்கள் - எதற்காக விண்டோஸ் தேவைப்படும் என்றும், விண்டோஸ் விசுவாசிகள் - ஆப்பிளிலும் விண்டோஸ் தேவைப்படுகிறது என்ற பெருமிதமும்.

இது இப்படி இருக்க, நாம் ஏன் நம் விண்டோஸுக்கு மேக் வடிவம் கொடுத்தாலென்ன என்று தோன்றியது...

இதற்கானதொரு மென்பொருளை சோதனை செய்து பார்த்தேன்.

Windows Blinds எனதாகப்பட்டது. இந்த மென்பொருள் உங்கள் விண்டோஸ் ஐகான்களுக்கு பதிலாக மேக்கில் பயன்படுத்தப்படும் ஐகான்களை நிறுவுகிறது. அனைத்து விண்டோஸ் விண்டோக்களுக்கும் மேக்கில் உள்ளதுபோல் தெரியும். விண்டோஸில் கிடைக்கும் ஒருசில skin களுக்கு மாற்றாக, இங்கு விதவிதமான மாற்று skin களை மாற்றிக்கொள்ளலாம். இதனுடன் வரும் Object Dock எனும் மென்பொருள் மேக்கில் வரும் டாக்கிங் முறையை செயல்படுத்துகிறது.
நிறுவுதல் எளிதாகத்தான் இருந்தது.
செயல்பாடுகள் நன்றாக இருந்தாலும், பின்வரும் இடையூறுகளால் இந்த மென்பொருள் பிடிக்காமல் போனது!
* தற்போது செயல்பாட்டில் இல்லாத ஏனைய விண்டோக்களின் தலைப்பு சரியாகத் தெரிவதில்லை.
* விண்டோக்களின் தலைப்பு தமிழ் யுனிகோட் எழுத்துருவில் இருந்தால், அதற்கு பதிலாக கேள்விக்குறிகள் தான் காட்டுகிறது.
* ஒவ்வொருமுறை பூட் செய்யும்போதும், இந்த மென்பொருளை வாங்குகிறீர்களா என கேட்டு தொல்லை செய்கிறது.
* மைக்ரோஸாப்ட் வோர்ட் போன்ற மென்பொருள்கள் தொடங்கும்போது அந்த விண்டோ மேலும் கீழுமாக போய்வருகிறது.

இந்த காரணங்களால், இந்த மென்பொருளை இப்போது நீக்கி விட்டேன். ஆனால் ஐகான்களை அப்படியே விட்டுள்ளது. இதனால் பாதகம் ஏதும் இல்லை. புதியதோர் உருவம் கிடைத்த மகிழ்சியில் இருக்கிறது என் கணிணி, பாவம் அதை ஏன் கெடுப்பானேன்?

கணிணி தொடங்கும்போது...

Windows கணிணி தொடங்கும்போது தானாகவே முடுக்கி விடும் startup programs - அதிகமாகிப்போய் - உங்கள் கணிணி மிகவும் தாமதமாக தொடங்குகிறதா? இவற்றைத் தவிர்ப்பது எப்படி?

Widows Registry க்கு சென்று என்கெங்கு தேடி சுத்தம் செய்வது என்று குழப்பமாக உள்ளதா?

லேப்டாப் என்றழைக்கப்படும் மடிக்கணிணி இப்போது ரொம்ப பிரபலமாகிக் கொண்டு இருக்கிறது. என்ன, விலைதான் சாமன்யாமானவர்களில் கைகளுக்கு எட்டாக்கனியாய் இருக்கிறது - முன்பைக்காட்டிலும் வெகுவாக விலை குறைந்திருந்தாலும்.

இணைய தளங்கள் மட்டுமல்ல, மின் அஞ்சல் முகவரிகள், ATM கணக்குகள், அலுவலக கணக்குகள் இத்யாதி, இத்யாதி - இப்படி பலதரப்பட்ட இடங்களில், பலதரப்பட்ட வகையான கடவுச்சொற்கள் நினைவில் வைத்துக்கொள்வது, கடினமே.

மேலும், பாடல் பற்றிய தகவல்களை நேரடியாக யுனிகோடில் செலுத்திக்கொள்ளவும் முடியும்.
இதன் பயன்பாடுகள்:
1. பாடல்களை தொகுத்துக்கொள்ளுதல். இந்த தொகுதி வழியாக, உங்கள் கோப்புத் தொகுதிகளையும் (folder) மாற்றி அமைக்க முடியும்.
2. உங்களுக்கேற்ற கலவையை ஏற்படுத்தி, அவற்றை மட்டும் பாடச்செய்தல்
3. mp3 ID Tag களை யுனிகோடில் மாற்றி அமைக்க முடியும்.
4. CD க்களை கொளுத்திக்கொள்ளவும் முடியும்.
5. CD யின் அட்டையை ப்ரிண்ட் செய்யும்போதும், இதே யுனிகோடில் இருக்கிறது.

ஆக பாடல்களை பாடச்செய்யவும், தொகுத்துக்கொள்ளவும், IDTag களை மாற்றவும், CD யில் கொளுத்தவும் இந்த ஒரு மென்பொருள் போதும் உங்களுக்கு.

If you spot me sporting a foxy smile, I will tell you, Firefox is one of the reasons!

Of course, Firefox will tell you why use firefox, but here are my reasons, primarily for better usability.

Searching for a text on a web page is lot easier
* You can set up to start the search as you type in the text, how cool is that!
* Search entry window is NOT a popup, so dont have to move the popup to see if theres search result behind it!
* You can instantaneously highlight the all the matches of the search!
Has an inbuilt download manager
* You can keep track of the current download and the previous downloads in a single window.
* Even access the previous downloads, open the download folder from the manager, even while you download.
* You can ask the download manager to retry the download for a failed download.
Changing the text size
* Now you can increase or decrease the text size infinitely larger or infinitely smaller just by using CTRL++ or CTRL-- keys! (compare that IE that gives only 5 size options)
Short history available from Menu
Previously visited web pages are easily available from menu, so you can easily go back without visiting the Full History section. And that's available even on a new session.
Inbuilt search bar
A single search bar to search across multiple search engines such as Google, Yahoo, Amazon, Dictionary or Ebay. You can add your own search engine too.
Inbuilt pop-up blocker
You dont have to download another plugin for popup blocking. Also blocks all plugins that automatically download.
You dont have to switch between different levels of security , allow download for one, and forget to reset, thus making your machine vulnerable to spy-wares.
Bookmarking has got a manager
Managing your bookmarks (favorites) is novice-friendly and lot easier now. Try it for your self, you will love it.

Organizing your Music Collection

Software to organize your personal music collection is really evolving fast.
There are more features being packed in.
Not just playing a mp3, now you can even burn CDs or create labels for CDs, which was once possible only from CD creator software's.
Updating MP3 tags or grouping the files based on the tags is feature I find most useful.
Who wouldn't like one software to do everything, atleast most related ones.
You can group songs by Album/Artist/Location/Genre and so on.
And as, MP3 tags allow upto three comment tags, you can add your own comment and device your own classification system.
Take a look at the image here.
I have used the 'Genre' tag to record the Raga of the song. Raga in Indian Music system identifies the scale of the composition (well, its much more than that, but a shorter version will do here).


I have used a software from JRiver called 'MediaJukeBox', there are many more software's available, being released and upgraded everyday.
Microsoft's Windows Media Player does include some of these features in Ver 10, but that's available only in XP. But I wouldn't depend on Microsoft.

Update on Mar 07, 2005
Now, in XP, Windows Explorer itself displays the MP3 tags, so you can sort and group by the MP3 tags, but doesn't let you edit the tags.

HOWTO Tips for Windows Power User

I will be adding Tips here for Windows Power users. If you know them already, just be glad that you are a Power user. Feel free to add any other.

1. How to delete a file without sending it to Recycle Bin?
Hold 'SHIFT' key also while you are deleting the file. 'SHIFT+DEL' is the 'permanent delete' - will delete unrecoverably - forever. This is also FAST delete. Will take lesser time than the typical delete of sending a file to Recycle Bin.

2. How to remove a program from automatically being started on system start?
There are places to check for this.
First would be
C:\Documents and Settings\{user}\Start Menu\Programs\Startup
If you a find a shortcut to the program that you don't want to start automatically, remove it from here. Just delete it.
Next place look would be
C:\Windows\win.ini or c:\WINNT\win.ini (depending on Win 98 or Win 2000)
Look for entries 'load=' or 'run=', remove any unwanted entries
(don't delete anything you don't know whets its for, it could be a geniune system program)
Still want to look further?
Open your registry (regedit)
Go to the following location:
MyComputer\HKEY_LOCAL_MECHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
You can remove, any unwanted entry from here.

3. How to do auto-completion in Windows command prompt?
In Unix systems, shell automatically would suggest the full file name or its matches when you invoke 'Tab' on a partially typed file name. Wanna simulate that in Windows?
Open your registry (regedit)
Go to the following location:
MyComputer\HKEY_LOCAL_MECHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Command Processor
Modify the entry 'CompletionChar'
Enter value of '9' (instead of whatever there)
Click ok.
For example:
Open a new command prompt. Type in C:\doc and tab out, you will get 'C:\"Documents and Settings"\' automatically.

4. On your browser: Whats the keyboard short key to go back to the last visited page?
Its 'BackSpace' key.

5. How to enable allowing of Renaming 'Recycle Bin'
By default Windows does not allow you to rename 'Recycle Bin'.
You will have to edit Registery for this:

Copy and paste the above in a file and save it as {anyfilename}.reg anywhere. Double click on the file name to Run the command. After its successful, you will see windows allowing to rename. (Rightclick on recycle bin to see rename option)
